EUROPA STUDY UNIT
Tonny VanLoij (Executive Secretary/Treasurer/Vice President) opened the meeting
Members Present: Steve Chun (AL); Alex Cwiekalo (OH); Jerome Stark (WA); Tonny VanLoij (CO)
Tonny presented his ESU Treasurer's report as of 30 June 2021:   $3,782.37 Checking, $25.25 Share.   Bottom line -- we are in good shape, thanks to Tonny's doing the printing, Don's auctions and member donations.
The combined APS StampShow / ATA NTSS 2019 was held at the Omaha Convention Center and Arena (aka CHI Health Center) 1-4 August 2019. With its commercial name, the Convention Center sounded like we were going to a hospital complex, but it really was a huge arena. Omaha weather was terrific the whole time.
We had 8 people at the ESU meeting on Saturday, 3 August (see picture above), which is a nice turnout for our club. Tonny reported that the club treasury has held steady at $3000+ over the past few years. This is quite amazing, as we are slowly shrinking due to attrition (mostly folks retiring from collecting) and higher postage rates. Many thanks to Tonny's cost-effective and time-consuming volunteer work to print the newsletter. To Don for his selfless work on the auctions, and of course to our members for their dues and donations.
We had a fun quiz of Europa questions (e.g. when was the CEPT formed?). The winner with the most correct answers was recent member Ken Pollack, who took away two Belgium black prints.
Saturday night we had a "banquet" of awesome steaks at Anthony's steak house:
|Starting from the left, Joe Running and his wife Maureen, Steve Chun, Shirley Heinzel and friend (Shirley on the right; Shirley is our UNPA midwest representative), Alex Cwiekalo and his wife Bert, Gary Lightbody, and Dana Roper.
The combined APS StampShow / ATA NTSS 2018 was held at the Greater Columbus Convention Complex in Columbus, Ohio, 9-11 August 2018. The venue was enormous with 650+ booths and more than 1,300 show exhibits (200+ were NTSS exhibits).
We had 12 people at the ESU meeting on Saturday, 11 August (see picture above). If that's not a new record, it sure comes close. I drove in for the 11 am meeting in the midst of an Ohio monsoon that had beautiful downtown Columbus under water. With our captain and first officer - Dana and Tonny - unable to attend (Dana had to cancel at the last minute) the meeting was mostly a gab session, which was OK as we all had a good time. We did have two prospective members attend, and I will follow up with more information about our Unit.
Dana scanned the old monographs and legacy handbook and put them out on the member's area of the website. Alex will maintain the computerized annual issues, sepac and EuroMed separately.
Another fun, well attended meeting!
The picture says it all. We broke records with the attendance at this one. We also added two — possibly three — new members!
