EUROPA STUDY UNIT
The ESU was founded in 1959, and over the years a number of souvenirs have been produced by and for the Unit. Some of these are still available from the ESU - see order information at the end of this list.
- EUROPEX sheets - 1962
EUROPEX was conducted in 1962 under the patronage of the Council of Europe and the ESU. Depicted are prize-winning designs for EUROPA postage stamps selected by a special jury of the International Committee of the European Schools day. An annual event since 1953, this year had 1,450,000 students from 12 countries participating. Type I is the most common, as it was the only legitimate issue. Type II is an overprint not authorized by the ESU.
These sheets are often seen on eBay and other auction sites. Covers also exist; a typical example is shown below.
- INTERPEX sheets - 1963
The ESU had a convention at the annual INTERPEX show in Chicago. INTERPEX issued two sheets, one in red with low values and one in blue with high values, to publicize the meeting and take advantage of the popularity of the EUROPA topic.
These sheets are also seen on eBay and other auction sites.
- EUROPEX sheets - 1963
Another set of souvenir sheets was issued for the second Europa stamp exhibition. Identical except for color, their authenticity is questionable. The were evidently prepared by a member of the Unit, but not as a formal ESU activity.
These sheets are not often seen, but are not considered to be scarce either. In other words, they should not command a premium price.
- Europa stamps 20th anniversary
The ESU printed a striking gold souvenir sheet in 1976 to mark the 20th anniversary of EUROPA stamps. (The scan does not do the gold color justice - it makes it look brown.)
These sheets are still available, and may be purchased from the ESU. They make a colorful and interesting addition to any Europa collection.
- ESU 25th anniversary
The 25th anniversary of the ESU coincided with the same anniversary of the CEPT. To commemorate the occasion, special covers were produced that were cancelled and sold at the annual NAPEX show. A EUROPEX stamp exhibit was also held within NAPEX.
These covers may be found at auction sites, but are elusive.
- EUROPEX at KNOXPEX - 1999
Another coincidental anniversary - the 50th anniversary of NATO and the 40th anniversary of the ESU - prompted the ESU to hold a EUROPEX at the annual KNOXPEX show in Knoxville, TN. A self-adhesive souvenir sheet was issued to commemorate the occasion, and a limited number of covers were prepared as well.
These sheets make a nice addition to the NATO section of a Europa collection. Covers are sold out, but sheets are still available and may be purchased from the ESU.
- Europa stamps 50th anniversary
Many countries both within and outside Europe issued stamps to publicize the 50th anniversary of the first Europa stamps. The ESU joined in with a colorful self-adhesive souvenir sheet, issued as part of the Washington 2006 Philatelic Exhibition, of which the ESU was a sponsor.
These sheets make an attractive addition to any Europa collection, and may be purchased from the ESU.
- ESU 50th anniversary
A special cachet applied to a legal size envelope, placed on sale at the 2009 National Topical Stamp Show (NTSS) in Dayton OH. The cachets were offered at the ESU table, where stamps were affixed and the NTSS souvenir cancel was applied.
A potentially rare and unique piece of ESU history, and certainly a must for any serious Europa collection.
